Lehman Brothers (LEH) files for bankruptcy protection on Sept. 15, 2008, after an eleventh-hour bid to find a buyer fell through over the weekend. Rival Merrill Lynch (MER) agrees to sell itself to Bank of America (BAC) to avoid a similar fate.
